Sydney Woodturners Guild
Timber and Working With Wood Show 2002

Once again, the Guild provided a display at the Timber and Working with Wood Show held at Fox Studios, Moore Park, Sydney on 21st, 22nd and 23rd June 2002.

This year, the event was deliberately organised as a combined Guild event rather than having one Region do the majority of the work. Southern Region handled the liaison with the organisers, assembled the stand (designed and constructed by Southern for the 2001 show), provided a static display of work for the three days and dismantled the stand after the event. The demonstrations and manning of the stand was performed by three Regions, one day each, who provided members and brought along a display of their work for the day. This year, the three days were covered admirably by Hawkesbury, Western & Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands respectively.

For the entire duration of the show, two lathes were running continuously and members were available to explain to visitors how things were done, discuss woodcraft and provide information about the Guild. It was encouraging to see a significant number of visitors, including many young people, expressing interest in joining the Guild and learning woodturning.

The show itself was up to it’s usual standard with new products, plenty of timber and bargains galore. Many of us saved a fortune on the principle that the more you spend the more you save! I was informed by one of the organisers that it was the most successful Sydney shows ever in terms of people through the gate. This was no doubt helped by the glorious weather and the parking arrangements which were a dramatic improvement over last year.

From the Guild’s point of view, our stand was a great success and to all involved, a sincere thank you for a job well done.

It’s now onwards and upwards to 2003.
